Leisa Lewis – Encaustic Mixed Media
Artist Statement
Abstract with a twist of expressionism, that’s my recent work, and I love it. Abstract is one of the hardest genres I’ve ever worked in, and for now it’s the truest way to express my artistic heart. My medium is beeswax and watercolor. I love the translucency of watercolor and the rich warmth of beeswax; together they give my work a look that is entirely its own. I paint the things that stay with me: an animal skull, a quiet feeling, something worn down by time but still standing.
I’m a little quirky, too. I love it when a piece of childhood art finds its way into the present day. The one thing that hasn’t made the trip yet is my glitter caterpillar, made from an egg carton. I haven’t counted it out, and it’s one reason that my studio is a living archive, where found things meet storytelling.
I want my art to feel like an open door. You don’t need to know anything about it to stop and feel something. If a piece slows you down and makes you feel connected, then I’ve done my job. Living with meaningful, beautiful objects, whether wearable or hung in your home, should bring a smile to your face.
