Robert Simmons – Oil with Cold Wax and Acrylic
Artist Statement
I approach my art as a child would; watching, trying, experimenting, until the aim is accomplished. Telling myself like a child, I can crawl, I can walk, I can run, I can draw a line. I learn and master undertakings by observing, training, learning, experimenting, failing, and repeating until I achieve my desired outcome.
I choose medium, substrate, colors, and tools to create a representation of my thoughts, my spirit, and my emotions. Each painting begins with a blank canvas, paper, or board of various sizes, without consideration of the result. I experiment with colors and values using a limited pallet.
I enjoy the motion and flow of shapes and colors looking for joy and happiness, incorporating geometric and free form shapes, various lines, variety of angles, curves, and circles with repeating patterns.
I allow the beginning marks, textures, and shapes to guide what the painting will become. Most works metamorphose several times until I sense the work has captured a reflection of myself. My works are generally non-objective abstraction, working with Acrylics or Oil with cold wax.
