Tracy Rose Moyers – Watercolor Artist

Artist Statement

Inspired by the Rocky Mountain west–the almost heavenly feel of the Rocky Mountains, the freedom and wild spirit of wildlife and the lore of living with and respecting nature and the view directly out my own studio window is the inspiration behind my paintings. The fluidity and spontaneity of the watercolor media fits in with the feel the subject matter gives me. Allowing the media and the subject matter to do what comes naturally without controlling.

I used to paint in oils but switched to watercolors decades ago when my children were born, to be able to paint around taking care of them. But I missed painting on canvas, so once a new type of canvas that watercolors can be used on came out, I tried it. The technique is different than painting on watercolor paper however I have enjoyed experimenting with it and loved what one can do with the watercolor paint on canvas. I love to concentrate on the eyes of animals or humans to reveal their inner spirit and soul, to connect personally with the subject matter is my focus. I enjoy painting people’s pets, whether it be a dog, cat, horse or other type of animal and giving them something special to remember their precious fur babies. So, I also paint pet portraits and paint pets on ornaments as special memorials for pet owners and their friends.

The approach to the work is direct, without any preliminaries. I like to just jump right in with painting. The process is based on intuition allowing the media and subject matter to become one. The style of painting leans more towards realism with an abstract touch with the desire to reveal the feelings the subject matter evokes within me. And to pass that feeling onto the viewer. My work has been described by Jason Horejs of Xanadu Gallery in Arizona, as American Realism conveying a sense of artistic patriotism.

I graduated from Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver Colorado with a degree in Commercial Art: Illustration and Graphics. And for the first few years I did commercial art such as hand lettered signs, logo designs and illustrations for businesses. I also was the courtroom artist for various television news stations. I started concentrating on my fine art of painting when my children were born. I had my own gallery at one time and have been represented by numerous galleries located in Virgina, Montana, and New York City, but now I mostly sell my work online through my etsy shop.
